International Grade 4 reading comprehension data
Languages
PIRLS assesses reading comprehension in the language(s) used for instruction and reading in participating education systems
SDG 4.1.1a and minimum proficiency
PIRLS is not an early-grade diagnostic assessment, but it can contribute to SDG 4.1.1 reporting at the end of lower primary and end of primary levels. Because it assesses Grade 4 reading comprehension, it is most useful for understanding whether children have moved beyond basic decoding into comprehension.
The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an international assessment coordinated by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). Conducted every five years, PIRLS measures the reading comprehension of Grade 4 learners and collects comprehensive background information from learners, teachers, school principals, and education systems. The assessment provides internationally comparable data on reading achievement and the factors associated with learning outcomes.
