Founded in 2001, DataFirst promotes open access to data from African countries to support high-quality, data-driven research and evidence-informed policymaking.

Our open data portal provides researchers with online access to survey and administrative microdata (unit-record level data). We collaborate with data producers to prepare and publish their data in line with international best practices for data dissemination. To support effective data use, we offer assistance through our online helpdesk.

DataFirst has a strong tradition of capacity building. We develop quantitative research skills through a suite of microdata analysis training courses and residential workshops. We also provide data curation training opportunities for African data managers in government and research institutions.

In addition to data curation, we enhance the usability of data through harmonisation and standardisation initiatives. Our research focuses on improving the quality, usability, and comparability of African microdata, and we work directly with data producers to strengthen the quality of their data products.
