I am a data scientist in the field of data curation with 30 years’ experience in preserving and sharing African data from governments and research institutions. I am responsible for data services and infrastructure at DataFirst. DataFirst’s open data repository, that provides open access to African data, is a World Data System member repository and has been awarded the Data Seal of Approval and CoreTrustSeal trusted digital repository certifications. I recently set up an African reproducibility and replication site on our repository to allow African researchers to post the data underlying their research for open, reproducible science. I also established Africa’s only Trusted Research Environment (TRE), our secure remote access data enclave, to widen research access to sensitive African data otherwise not available to researchers. My team and I pass on lessons learned by training African researchers and government officials to curate and share their data and assisting SA universities with Research Data Management policymaking.
