Description This user guide includes background information about the design, implementation, and reporting of the PIRLS 2001 assessment in addition to information specific to the data files contained in the international database. Chapters 1-3 describe the design of the PIRLS reading test and background questionnaires. Chapters 4-7 detail the sample design, data collection procedures, scaling, and analysis and reporting issues. Further details of the contents of Chapters 1-7 are available from the PIRLS 2001 Technical Report (Martin, Mullis, & Kennedy, 2003). Chapter 8 documents the content and format of the data files in the database, discusses the appropriate use of the files and variables, and draws attention to special considerations that arise from the complex design of the assessment. Example analyses are illustrated for the use of both SPSS and SAS statistical software in Chapters 9 and 10.
