    Abstract
    The Human Science Research Council (HSRC) and Data Research Africa undertook this survey in the PWV, Natal and the Western Cape on behalf of the Institute for Multi-Party Democracy (MPD) in order to gather data on the democratic process in South Africa.

    Eleven teams of black field-workers were used in the first phase and nine such teams in the second phase. Each of these teams of field workers consisted of four interviewers. The teams were deployed in the various areas according to a fieldwork programme. Maps and aerial photographs were used to identify the areas and survey regions. Due to the size of the sample and time restrictions, the teams had to cope with a heavy schedule and send statistics on the progress in the field to the office every day. The white, coloured and Asian interviewers worked independently and were visited regularly at which time their work was also checked.
