Abstract
South Africa's education system remains characterised by high levels of inequality, rooted in a history of racially stratified schooling that created large and persistent differences in educational opportunity across population groups. A central question is whether the expansion of education since the end of apartheid has translated into greater intergenerational mobility, or whether these inequalities continue to shape outcomes.
