Abstract
The chapter reviews the scale and prevalence of disability in South Africa during the period 2021/2022 with specific focus on demographic characteristics of sex, age, province, geographic location (urban or non-urban), disability status, and school attendance in view of the UN Millenium Development Goals (2030), focusing on the theme “no one left behind” and Agenda 2063 “The Africa we want”, ensuring that people with limitations are fully included in future development efforts. A review of the status in South Africa in 2022 will provide an insight into whether or not the country is on target to achieving SDG goals in relation to the inclusivity of education, health, social protection, and employment for people with disabilities, budgetary allocation, and amenities. This chapter provides a descriptive analysis of the STATS SA census data for 2022 and also uses information from online publications and surveys on prevalence of disability in South Africa disaggregated by province, population group, household head, sex, age, education status, and grant support. The analysis provides an insight into achievements post-COVID-19 pandemic period and proposes areas of intervention in alignment with SDGs 2030 and Agenda 2063.
