    Abstract

    The survey was undertaken in 2005 and conducted face-to-face interviews with a sample of 1 000 adults from Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg, where ninety percent of the country's Jewish population reside.

    Version 1 of the dataset was provided to DataFirst by the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Cape Town. Version 1.1 is this dataset, with data files merged and variable labels added by DataFirst and a number of variables recoded for ease of use.

    Scope

    Notes

    The survey collected background data on Jewish households, including: citizenship, education levels, home language, home ownership, marital status, migration history, and number of children. Data on political and social attitudes of respondents was also collected. Collection of data specifically related to being Jewish in South Africa was the main purpose of the survey. This included data on: Childrens' enrollment in Jewish schools and the respondent's attitudes to these schools; attitudes to Israel, religious beliefs, practices and experiences; attitudes to and experiences of anti-semitism, the Jewish community and Jewish organisations.
