    Abstract

This dataset comes from Mzantsi Wakho (YouthPulse) — a longitudinal, mixed-methods community study of adolescents living with HIV in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, a region marked by structural vulnerability. The study aims to identify risk and resilience factors that influence antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence; access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services; and other HIV-care outcomes among HIV-positive adolescents. Through linked quantitative and qualitative components, the project engages HIV-positive youths, their caregivers, healthcare providers, and social-service actors to better understand barriers and facilitators to effective HIV care and SRH service uptake. Data were collected over three survey waves (Wave 1: 2014–2015; Wave 2: 2016–2017; Wave 3: 2017–2018), combining self-reported questionnaires, clinic record abstraction, and facility-level service profiling — allowing analysis of temporal trends in resilience, treatment adherence, and service utilization. Although the baseline target was approximately 1,100 adolescents (with 1,059 identified as HIV-positive), the retention rates across follow-ups remained high (93–94%)

    Data Collection Notes

Data collection involved two primary sources: (1) a participant self-report questionnaire, completed with support from an interviewer to accommodate potentially low literacy levels, and (2) abstraction of clinic records. Clinic-level data, including individual patient records and information on services delivered by healthcare facilities, was gathered from hospitals and outpatient clinics. The study aimed to interview 600 HIV-positive adolescents in the first wave of survey data collection. However, a total of 1,060 participants were successfully interviewed.
