Survey of Employers and Self-Employed in South Africa 2023
South Africa’s government statistics agency, Statistics South Africa, undertakes an annual Survey of Employers and Self-Employed (SESE) to collect information on businesses in the informal sector in South Africa. The SESE was conducted in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017, and the latest survey was conducted in 2023. Data on the self-employed individuals is obtained from respondents that identify as being self-employed when they are enumerated in Statistics SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS)
The SESE enables the collection of reliable data on individuals running businesses not registered for VAT. It helps identify the non-income tax paying and income tax paying businesses within the non-VAT paying businesses, and to the contribution to SA’s economy made by these businesses.
