The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) was established in Rhodes University in 1954. Focused on the Eastern Cape the ISER has had a diverse portfolio of research initiatives involving its own staff and staff members of other Rhodes academic departments. Scholars associated with the ISER published scholarly volumes on an early survey, the Keiskammahoek Rural Survey (1947-1952) which documented changes in Keiskammahoek since the establishment of the apartheid regime in 1948, and the Border Regional Survey (1956-1964) amongst others. The ISER currently focuses on multidisciplinary research on socio-economic challenges in the African context. DataFirst collaborated with the Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU), then a research unit within the ISER, and the Corey Library at Rhodes University on a project to rescue and publish the Keiskammahoek Rural Survey data archived in the Corey Library. The resultant dataset is made available in this collection.
