Abstract
The Georgia Tobacco Survey collected data on tobacco usage in Georgia. This data can be used to assess the extent of the illicit tobacco trade in the country. Tobacco taxes are critical in reducing tobacco consumption and thereby improving public health. However, the tobacco industry claims that tax increases will increase illicit tobacco trade. Therefore, research evidence on the size of the illicit cigarette market is needed to inform tobacco tax policies. A household survey was conducted in Georgia to collect data on tobacco use and the trade in the country. Interviews were conducted with households in the cities of Tbilisi and Kutaisi, and the municipalities of Zugdidi, Gori, and Akhaltsikhe. These regions were chosen to represent geographical diversity and varying proximity to border areas and Russian occupied territories.Kind of Data
