CNEP began in the late 1980s with surveys in the first national elections of the 1990s in Germany, Britain, the United States and Japan. It expanded in 1993 to include eight more countries and additional questions. CNEP now includes 35 national election surveys in 21 countries. It is now the third-largest international project of its kind. This dataset is a South African subset of the international dataset from the 2004 wave of the CNEP survey, CNEP III (South Africa was added as a survey country in this wave). Over time, new question modules have been added to capture important aspects of elections in the new member countries. The Mershon Center for International Security Studies at Ohio State University hosts the CNEP website, and sponsors some of the surveys.","coll_dates":[{"start":"2004","end":"2004","cycle":""}],"nation":[{"name":"South Africa","abbreviation":"zaf"}],"geog_coverage":"This survey has national coverage.","geog_unit":"The lowest level of geographic aggregation covered by the data is city\/town.","analysis_unit":"Individuals","data_kind":"Sample survey data","notes":"The CNEP surveys collect basic demographic data, and data on the following: personal discussion networks, use of the mass media (internet, newspapers, radio, television), political information from associations, contacts by political parties, socio-political values, attitudes towards democracy, civic participation, the integrity of the electoral process, and voting behaviour in the most recent election."},"method":{"data_collection":{"data_collectors":[{"name":"AC Nielson","abbreviation":"","affiliation":""}],"coll_mode":"Face-to-face [f2f]"}},"data_access":{"dataset_use":{"contact":[{"name":"DataFirst","affiliation":"University of Cape Town","email":"support@data1st.org","uri":"http:\/\/support.data1st.org"}],"cit_req":"Richard Gunther and Paul Beck.
