INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

The Data Quality Project is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The aim of the Project is to deepen the capacity of South African researchers to conduct top-quality research using survey data that is placed in the public domain by the government statistics agency, Statistics South Africa.[1] This is being done through the Project's intensive research agenda that interrogates the quality of national datasets and, where possible, provides value-added input to advance the usability of these datasets. All findings on and additions to the datasets are made available to the research community through peer reviewed journal articles, technical papers and web-based information. By demonstrating the influence of these quality concerns on empirical work measuring poverty, inequality and unemployment and through focused training workshops, the Project seeks to sensitise the research community to the importance of data quality issues as part of the research process. The Project also hopes to build capacity in the assessment of data quality in South Africa. For more information on the project read here.[2]
