Matthew Welch, Director of DataFirst, and Lynn Woolfrey, DataFirst’s Data Manager, participated in the IASSIST Conference, Tampere Finland, 25-29 May 2009. This organisation – the International Association of Social Science Information Service and Technology – represents data specialists from survey archives and universities around the world. The programme included workshops and discussions on the technical aspects of data management, including metadata standards such as the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) as well as presentations on the management of different data types, including GIS data and Public Opinion data. The Association has formed a Special Committee for data specialists from underrepresented countries, and Lynn Woolfrey chaired a session at the conference devoted to this group, and participated in business meetings pertinent to their future representation. At the conference Matthew Welch met with delegates from the International Household Survey Network to develop further links between this organisation and DataFirst.
